In this interview of "Behind the Weave," we sit down with talented designer Laura Peters from Holistic Interiors who has chosen our Mare Studio materials to bring her vision to life. This conversation reveals the story, inspiration, and vision on materials.
Q: How would you describe your creative process?
Every project is unique, so my process evolves each time. I start by outlining a plan, but always leave room for personal customisation based on the client’s needs. It begins with fresh eyes and an open mind. The first ideas often emerge from early conversations and thorough site visits — many answers are already there; we just need to weave them into a Holistic story.
I try to keep things simple, guided by both logic and intuition. This keeps me connected to my own creative core and aligned with the client’s vision. It’s easy to get lost in complex ideas, so I focus on being concrete rather than purely conceptual. This way, we can clearly agree on the look, feel, and form before exploring creative solutions.
I’m most creative in the evenings, when the day has settled, the kids are asleep, and distractions fade away. That’s when I truly enjoy focusing on beautiful projects.
Q: Which materials, textures, and colours do you love working with in interiors?
I’m drawn to warm, rich fabrics, walnut or oiled oak wood, natural stone, and a colour palette inspired by nature. The colours can be bold and contrasting but still feel authentic. I believe in creating a balanced yin/yang harmony between materials and colors, combined with plenty of plants. This balance brings a sense of calm and well-being to any space.
Q: What helps you slow down and find calm in a busy world?
Walking in nature — especially dunes and forests — is my go-to. I also cherish sleeping in on weekends and diving into a good book. Day to day, I try to bike as much as possible. I only take the car if it’s raining or the destination is too far. Biking clears my mind while I shuttle between school, sports, and meetings. It’s my moment to reset.
Q: How do you see the role of interior design in everyday life purely aesthetic, or also emotional and ritualistic?
It’s definitely both. I believe a home reflects who you are, so it deserves care and attention, not just tidying up, but creating an atmosphere that nurtures well-being. That means considering things like lighting is it balanced, not too harsh or dim? Are there cozy seats to retreat to? I love designing multiple seating areas to encourage rest and connection.
That’s why it’s good to take a fresh look at your home every now and then. Maybe it’s time to rearrange furniture or do a deep clean. Your home deserves seasonal attention, and after a refresh, it’s wonderful to calmly appreciate your surroundings.
